Staining Wicker Rocking Chairs

Painting my old rocking chairs with AS Chalk Paint (Provence) really gave them a new life. But there was something missing. The wicker had been really weathered, one more than the other, and they never really looked like I wanted them to look on the porch.

I researched it and the opinions were mixed–some said staining was a great idea, others said don’t do it. So I took a chance and bought some stain. After only investing $75 in both of these rockers, I could afford to be wrong. I went with a light stain that I thought would go well with my porch–Rust-Oleum Summer Oak Wood Stain.

To apply it, I chose brush made for staining. Then I just applied it like I would paint–making sure to really get in the wicker and cover the whole chair and not making it too thick. If there were places that had a little too much, I wiped it off with a rag. When I was done, I let it dry overnight. (It says one hour, I gave it 12). It only took one coat to get the coverage I wanted.

Here’s how it looked when I was done:

Not only did it make the rocking chairs look fresh and new, they are also protected from the elements. I couldn’t be happier! So if you’re thinking about staining wicker rocking chairs, definitely go for it! You’ll be happy you did.
